When and how were you first introduced to yoga?
My first yoga class was at Yoga Eight on University over ten years ago on a whim with a Groupon. One teacher was MaryAnn, and to this day I still remember her gentle guidance. Although short-lived, my experience with Yoga Eight was positive and contributed to my interest in yoga.
What benefits have you gotten from practicing yoga?
After practice, there is a sense of equanimity and restoration from daily responsibilities. I’ve also noticed greater balance even with household chores and walking. My feet feel grounded and provide stability. Lastly, yoga offers a feeling of community by the opportunity to join others at all levels of experience and motivation.
Why did you become a member at Radiant Lotus Yoga?
Having a yoga studio in Waunakee again is a blessing. I wanted to show my support for the studio and teachers by becoming a member. The teachers and patrons are always welcoming, and the classes offer variety to help you see with fresh eyes.
What inspires or motivates you to show up on your mat?
I'm at a stage in my life where self-care is important, and yoga is now part of that regimen. It’s a form of meditation and celebration of movement. My mat is also a place to practice resilience because not every session is the same. Wobbling out of Virabhadrasana III is not failure, it’s just the current moment. There are plenty of chances to build upon one’s practice.
Do you have a favorite quote?
"Begin again." I've heard Joseph Goldstein often say this in the context of meditation and mindfulness. This phrase lets me know that it's okay to fail, and this is normal. There are opportunities to try again.
Do you have a favorite yoga pose?
Trikonasana because it encourages strength in my legs combined with a heart opener. I feel like my whole body is connected and in tune with the earth.
